By Sarla Donovan CONCERN OVER the layout and future development of Scott Park in Mt Pleasant has prompted a meeting early next month. The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board decided to set up the meeting after a deputation from Coastal Pathway Group chairman Scott Babington last week. Mr Babington raised concerns about public access around the south side of the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club’s new boat shed, which is currently fenced off. Although larger than the previous shed, which was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, the new building wasn’t publicly notified. This was because other buildings in the park, including the Mt Pleasant Bowling Club, were demolished and not rebuilt, community board member Tim Lindley told Bay Harbour News yesterday. Mr Babington said he was concerned the fenced off area
didn’t have a pathway which would give access to public users. Yacht club committee member Tim Prickett said he didn’t think the boat shed or the fence impeded access for the public. The fence was to protect planting, “There are numerous ways you can get to the waterfront,” said Mr Prickett. The community board wants to develop a 10-year master plan for the park. Board chairwoman Sally Buck and members Darrell Latham and Mr Lindley will attend, along with other stakeholders and interested parties. Mr Lindley said it was “timely” to look at the future of the park. Neither Mr Babington nor Mr Prickett were aware of the meeting, but both said they would be keen to be involved. The meeting will be held in early September, date to be advised. •The boat shed will be officially opened on September 2, 10am.

TOILET STOP ROLL Tourists who pulled over for a toilet stop in Pigeon Bay at the weekend found themselves in a tight spot when they forgot to put the hand brake on. Their van rolled into a ditch, and the Akaroa Fire Brigade was called to help tow it out.

It’s also going to visit each owner in person, to ascertain how they are using the land. About 50 Heathcote residents were shocked earlier this year when they received Ruth Dyson a letter from KiwiRail saying they needed a “licence to occupy” the company’s land at an annual rate of $350 a year with a yearly increase of two per cent. The alternative was to remove any private structures on the land. David Gordon, on behalf of KiwiRail, apologised in person at a meeting organised by Port
SMART BINS FOR AKAROA Two ‘big belly’ bins have been requested for trial in Akaroa. The Banks Peninsula Community Board has asked the city council for the smart bins, which are fitted with sensors that can detect when they are nearing capacity and send an alert to maintenance contractors when they need emptying.

Julia Holden Our People People of Lyttelton’s rich history Artist Julia Holden is the creator of the Lyttelton Redux exhibition at Canterbury Museum. The Redcliffs-based artist talks to Sarla Donovan about her work and arriving in the city post-quake What brought you here in 2012, when the city was so broken from the quakes? I had been living in Melbourne for four and a half years and prior to that was living on Waiheke Island. My partner had come here as a first responder after the September 4, 2010, earthquake, as a building inspector. He was two weeks away from finishing up when the February 22, 2011, earthquake struck. It wasn’t quite on my plans as a permanent place to live. It must have been a bit of a shock after the vibrancy of Melbourne? People were just trying to put their lives together – they were very warm towards me because

so many people had left. I grew up in Whangarei and that’s the landscape of my childhood so Christchurch is completely different to what I’m used to. My family is all up there so I expect I’ll return there at some stage. Do you feel like you’re putting down some roots? We’re talking about leaving
at Christmas, but my partner’s job keeps changing all the time and being extended. If we’d known we’d be here this long, we might have done some things differently. What were your first impressions of the city? I was so struck by what I saw when I first came. The red zone
was still in place and the houses were still there; it was quite eerie. It really prompted me to think about how art can be useful at a time like this. There have been lots of spontaneous things happening where people have just done things – like the space invader lattice. It’s been fascinating to watch the changes

since that time; the city’s quite transformed. How has it affected your art? When I was in Melbourne, I was mainly making art for myself, whereas here, it really makes me think about how art can be used to connect people. I did a series of paintings of Christchurch, and five of those were installed as billboards in Auckland in 2013 with the title Wish You Were Here. It was a way of sharing what was happening in Christchurch with the rest of New Zealand. The thing is, I didn’t have a sense of what wasn’t here. I’d never seen the city before the earthquakes. You must have experienced a few tremors since arriving? I’m from Northland and we don’t have them at all. I’ve experienced them in Hawke’s Bay, but not like here. It just blows my mind really, I’m not surprised people were so traumatised. It made me want to help them and remind them of the good things about the city. It sounds terrible but, in some ways, the city is not as interesting now as it was. Purely from a visual standpoint – I’d never seen anything like it in my life, I found it absolutely riveting.

recreated for exhibition You studied at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland as a mature student. What were you up to before going to art school? Before Elam, I worked in film for 10-15 years as a storyboarder. That’s probably why I like the projects – I miss that about working in film, the collaboration. I studied architectural drafting and then, just as I qualified, the building industry collapsed, which is how I ended up in film. I was a chef before that but my partner does most of the cooking now. How did you get the idea for your Lyttelton portraits? Again, one of those things that just happened. Ideas evolve from a kernel. The series prior to this was I’m Your Fan from 2015. I dressed up Christchurch artists and painted their bodies to look like one of their favourite paintings or portraits, then photographed them. I was conflating that idea of influence and conversations about art over time. In the course of that, Jeff, my partner, was feeling a bit left out – he’s not an artist but he is a sailor. I thought, I’ll do a portrait of him as Captain Cook and I loved it; I wanted to do more. How were they made?
BROKEN: Julia Holden’s Catholic Cathedral 2013 was one of five paintings of Christchurch displayed on billboards around Auckland.
I worked with Lyttelton Museum to nominate people, both ordinary folk – the local butcher, the sheriff, people who’d been locked up – as well as the famous ones. In most cases, I tried to have a generational connection, which is true for David Bundy who portrays the local butcher, and Elizabeth McCombs whose granddaughter came down from Wellington to do it. I’d find something to reference the local figure, a painting or something,
go down to the $3 shop and find some clothing or material that would be suitable. My friend Wendy Rendle would help me sew it into a costume. We’d make the ‘outfit’ and then I’d make the hair, sometimes with a wig, sometimes with clay. It’s like a sculpture, a ceramic and a painting all together. What’s a typical day like in your studio? It depends what I’m doing. If I’m preparing a portrait, I have

to find the clothes, get the props or make the props. Then I’ve got to set up the studio space, mix the paint, have a cup of tea with the subject, because I want them to feel relaxed. It normally takes 20-30min to do the painting, so it’s quite fresh and wet when the photograph is taken. It’s an unusual style – did you invent it? No, it comes from Boo Ritson, an artist I came across 10 years ago, although she made more
Americana-pop iconography. At the time I saw it, I thought that’s brilliant, why didn’t I think of that. I just thought it was so funny. I was working in portraiture, which is not very fashionable but this gave it a different approach. Are the portraits for sale? They are for sale. I’d really like someone to buy the whole collection. I’d like them to find a home here in Christchurch. It’s been so much fun, the interaction and dialogue and working with the subject directly. Do you have any hobbies outside of painting? I haven’t got a lot of time outside of work – I also have a job as a teacher’s technician at the training college in Dovedale. I do really enjoy walking and, if I wasn’t in Christchurch, I’d do a lot more swimming (the water’s too cold for me here.) What’s next on the horizon? I’ve just had a most intensive work period and now I’m having a bit of a pause. •The Lyttelton Redux exhibition is showing at Canterbury Museum, Rolleston Ave, until October 23.
Look a little deeper at the action being taken to improve our precious water. This year, there are new requirements on farmers to limit the effects of farming on water quality. The majority of farmers are already doing the right thing, but more needs to be done to truly improve our precious water. We are working with farmers so that they know exactly what they need to do. It will take time for these improvements to have an effect on our water quality and quantity, but we’re off to a good start. Look a little deeper at

to reduce overflow
Motoring SENSORS HAVE been attached to three rubbish bins in the Estuary Windsports Area, in attempts to cut down on overflow. The sensors use sound waves that bounce off material in the bin, alerting contractors that it needs to be emptied. The two-month pilot will test the new technology, which has been developed by local design and innovation company inFact, before the city council makes a decision on rolling them out more widely. Another seven sensors will be deployed at rubbish trouble spots around the city in the next few weeks. Alerts are sent to contractors’ phones and bin status across the city can be viewed in an online dashboard telling
them how full each bin is. They also track the levels of rubbish providing a graphic illustration of when the bins are most used. City council recreational services operations manager Ed Hadfield said the ultimate goal was to have litter-free parks. The project shows how technology can be used to solve everyday problems, Smart Cities programme manager Teresa McCallum said. “We’re really excited about the potential of these bin sensors to clean up an issue that causes a lot of annoyance and inconvenience to the community. The bin sensor pilot is a separate project to the Smart Cities’ trial of solar-powered ‘Bigbelly’ smart bins.

News Scottish barn dancing fundraiser for seafarers
Fashion By Sarla Donovan DUST OFF your kilts and dancing shoes – a ceilidh (kay-lee) is coming to town. The Scottish barn dance is being put on by the Lyttelton Seafarer’s Centre as a fundraiser. It’s looking forward to having another successful event after last year’s inaugural one attracted 120 people and raised $1000 for the charity. Co-manager Jess Armstrong said she was surprised by the level of enthusiasm on the dance floor last year. “People got very into it.” As well as live music from celtic ceilidh band The Rice Paddies, there will be Scottish dancing instructions and there’s “no experience required,” Mrs Armstrong said. The Seafarers Centre provides a centre in Lyttelton to help with the physical and spiritual needs of seafarers who come into the port. •The Lyttelton Seafarers Centre Ceilidh Scottish Barn Dance will be on Saturday at the recreation centre, 25 Winchester St, 6.30-10pm. $10/$5 or $25 for a family.

A LARGE crowd attended the official opening of the new library, community centre and museum in Sumner at the weekend. They enjoyed songs by local school children before the building was officially declared open by Mayor Lianne Dalziel and the community was welcomed in.

“The opening of Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre is especially touching and significant when you stop to consider where we came from, and what Sumner was going through just six years ago,” Ms Dalziel said. Armitage Willams Construction built the $10 million centre on behalf of the city council, starting work in late July, 2016.
The Sumner Redcliffs Historical Society contributed $50,000 towards the cost of the space for the museum. The society’s honorary secretary Topsy Rule is thrilled with the new home. The society lost its museum space in the old Sumner Borough Council chambers building as a result of the February
22, 2011, earthquake. “The building will be such an asset for Sumner and Redcliffs as it is 110 years since the original building of Sumner Borough Council offices and town hall was opened,’’ Mrs Rule said. Matuku Takotako is the original Ngāi Tahu name for Sumner Beach.

By Sarla Donovan READY, SET, cook. Otis Swallow and Noah Cobby from Diamond Harbour School have been named Canterbury’s top intermediate-aged cooks. Their winning way with vegetables earned them top spot at the inaugural Root to Tip cook-off at Casebrook Intermediate last week. Their roasted carrots with walnut and parsley pesto entrée, followed by a potato and basil pizza with pumpkin base main, were judged the competition’s best dishes by a panel of top foodies. Chefs Jonny Schwass and Alesha Bilbrough-Collins, of Bearlion Foods, and Alex Davies, of Gatherings Restaurant, judged the eight finalists. The year 7 and 8 cooks were tasked with creating a fresh, seasonal dish using every part of the vegetable – from root to tip. Otis and Noah, the only all year 7 team and the only boys in the final, spent hours perfecting their recipes. “We trialled them three times before the competition and made some changes. The pesto recipe said to use pinenuts but we used walnuts instead, because it’s more in season. You got more points for being seasonal,” Otis said.
He learnt to cook at home and at school with cooking teacher Maria Lee. “At home, I cook things like steak, and bacon and eggs is pretty fun to make, too. At school, we don’t use meat as much. This year, they’ve given us, like, a mystery box and we have to make a meal out of it. It’s fun because we get to be creative.” “We were really happy to be given first prize. I didn’t think we were going to win and I was very excited. It was pretty good to beat the girls.” They had an hour to cook the starter and 1hr 45min for the main. “It was pretty intense at the start

As the newly appointed Performing Arts teacher, when I first came to Linwood College I was quick to see the wonderful talent that our school had and sought a musical which our students and families would enjoy. Settling on a Maverick Musical called, ‘Wolfstock’ (written by Mary McMahan with music by Donald Woodward), this was the perfect challenge for our students.
With time and practice the students thrived in this environment and the end product was exciting, funny and dynamic. I am exceptionally proud of my students and the effort that they put in. To all the parents who transported, waited, got up super early and gathered costumes - thank you so much! We could not have done this without your support. I can't wait for the next one. In early July, selected students were given the opportunity to attend the annual Christ’s College Emerging Leaders’ Conference, along with representatives from many Canterbury schools. At this conference many inspirational speakers told their own unique stories and passed on quintessential advice for
aspiring young leaders. Callum Lawson, said that the day was an inspiration. His favourite message was from the speaker Joel Bouzaid, that leadership is something that you can own, something that you can bend and mould to suit your traits and strengths, so that you can be the leader you hope to be.

Topsy Rule – What a great job at long last the city council will be doing to Shag Rock corner – there have been many accidents and deaths/ drownings over the years and congratulations to Darrell Latham for his hard work on this project.
When summer is coming lots of people like to get down to the beach there when walking to Sumner. When are the steps going to be reopened? At the moment you have to scramble down over rocks. I am waiting to hear someone has fallen and broken their leg! Perhaps some temporary steps could be made. Walking all the way to Clifton is too far for some older people and the footpath there gets congested with people, dogs and sometimes bicycles.

Step closer for Redcliffs Ruth Dyson, MP for Port Hills says the wheels are finally in motion to return Redcliffs School back to where it belongs – in Redcliffs THE RETURN of Redcliffs School to its community moved one step closer recently when the hearings panel voted unanimously to recommend that the city council agrees to the land swap – the Redcliffs School site for Redcliffs Park. I must say that I was really impressed with the process. Most impressive were the five Redcliffs School students who not only presented a considered and thoughtful submission, but calmly and strongly answered questions. Well done to Charli, Mia, Martina, Hamish and William – you made us all very proud! It says a lot about the strength of the school and community that these students were in year 2 when the school moved to Sumner and are off to high school next year. Even though the students stole the show, other voices and perspectives were heard – including concerns that the

current sports users of the park needed an alternative venue, local residents with both support and opposition, Ngai Tahu who preferred a different use for the school site and the school board – all of whom received a very engaged response from the panel members. It felt like democracy in action! But this is just the first step. The city council will decide on September 7 whether to accept or reject this proposal. Should it agree, the Ministry of Education then starts its process of public engagement. This process will answer many of the questions that local residents have asked
which could not be answered by the city council. And although there is no requirement for them to do so, the school will engage with the community on the actual design of the school to get the best possible outcome. The school is currently working on their education brief which will provide guidance to the ministry about the master planning and design. This part of the process is being undertaken under the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act which still has public input but in a different way than the formal submission process which city council has just completed. It feels like such a long time since the minister made the decision to allow Redcliffs School to return home but finally the wheels are in motion for this to happen.

Pupils give kapa haka debut PLANTING: Some of the volunteers who helped to plant more than 3000 native plants into a new reserve opposite Redcliffs Park at the weekend.
Native planting in Redcliffs VOLUNTEERS planted almost 3500 native plants in a new reserve opposite Redcliffs Park at the weekend. Scott Babington, chairman of the Coastal Pathway Group, said about 100 people helped out over the two days. “It was a fantastic effort, especially considering the cold and windy conditions on Sunday.” The reserve at the end of the causeway was a gravel
parking lot previously and, more recently, was used by the construction company responsible for the Beachville Esplanade Wall and Coastal Pathway construction. Plants for the reserve were donated by the Pacific Development Trust, while the Mainland Foundation helped to supply and spread the soil and the Lion Foundation helped to obtain and place the boulders.
Parents, teachers and pupils were treated to a kapa haka performance at the Governors Bay community hall recently. Both the Diamond Harbour and the Governors Bay school kapa haka groups performed at the event, which was run for the first time. It was an outstanding performance and the Diamond Harbour School kapa haka group is looking forward to more opportunities to perform in the future. There are 50 pupils from years 4-8 in the kapa haka group which is led by teacher Matua Maaka Tau.
Heathcote’s wearable art OVER THE last few weeks at Heathcote Valley School, year 5-6 pupils have been creating masks and year 7-8s have been creating wearable art costumes. Thirteen pupils modelled wearable art costumes last week at Horncastle Arena as part of the Christchurch Primary School’s Cultural Festival.
Acting principal Fay Le Cren said they were “absolutely stunning.” A special assembly was held at the school on Friday to showcase the costumes. Liz Haddock and Mel Sutton were thanked for their work organising and supporting the pupils.

Paddleboarding to world champs

Sumner runners on podium SUMNER RUNNING club members cracked the podium on multiple occasions at the Canterbury road championships in Bottle Lake Forest at the weekend. The club’s top performer was Nathan Jones, who won the masters men 40-plus 10km race in a time of 35min 17sec. Blair McWhirter, in his first race for the club, finished second in the senior men’s 10km event in a time of 32min 32sec. Jess Fahey also found her way to the podium, finishing third in the under-20 women’s event with her sister Meg taking fifth place in the same event. The juniors continued their good form with Hero Barrettelli, 7, Amelie Clark, 8, and Abi ScottDouglas, 8, all claiming top three finishes in their grade eight and under race. By Gordon Findlater MT PLEASANT’S Lucy Te Moananui has been battling the cold winter mornings in preparation for the ISA world SUP and paddleboard championship in Denmark next month. “I’m lucky because my husband gets me out of bed every morning. He wants me to do well so he’s been kind of like a coach. Every morning, the alarm goes off, cup of tea, wet suit, and we’re off,” said Te Moananui. She finished second at this year’s national champs and was then selected to compete in the world championship as part of the New Zealand team. The championship consists of five different paddleboarding disciplines, with individual champions crowned in each event and an overall champion nation named at the conclusion. With a couple of world champions in their ranks, the New Zealand team has hopes of gold in Denmark.

WAVE RIDER: Lucy Te Moananui will represent New Zealand for the first time at next month’s world championship in Denmark.
She moved to Sumner 10 years ago from the United Kingdom and soon took up surfing and eventually SUP surfing. “I loved it, it was different, it was challenging and I’ve just kept on doing it,” said Te
Moananui. A teacher by day, she is currently taking a year out of the classroom to do her Master of Education in Te Reo Maori at Canterbury University. “It’s been great. It’s given me a bit more flexibility than being in the classroom all day, which means I can study around surfing.” Te Moananui departs for Denmark next week, where the conditions will be cold, something she’s become used to over winter. “It will be warmer than here. The water temperature there is going to be around 15 deg C, which to me right now is like a bath because here we’re looking at about 9 deg C in the water,” said Te Moananui. The world championship runs from September 1-10 in Vorupor and Copenhagen.
Bays on track for fifth premier league title FERRYMEAD BAYS are just one win away from becoming the first club to win five mainland premier league titles. Bays held their nerve at the weekend to win two crucial games against Universities 3-0
on Friday and Nelson Suburbs 4-0 on Sunday. The results mean, with one round remaining, Bays are one point ahead of defending champions Cashmere Technical who also have four MPL titles.
Bays’ final match will be against bottom of the table Western on Saturday at 1pm at English Park. Needing a result to have any chance of avoiding relegation Western won’t be taken lightly.
